Notre Dame has hired men’s basketball alum Pat Garrity to a first-of-its-kind role, the Irish announced Tuesday. He will serve as general manager for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as the primary sports administrator for men’s hoops.

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander was the first to report the news.

“Garrity, 48, is believed to be the first person to ever occupy this type of role in college athletics,” Norlander wrote.

The father of Notre Dame walk-on tight end Henry Garrity, Pat Garrity played for the Fighting Irish from 1994-98 and spent a decade in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns (1998-99) and Orlando Magic (1999-2008).

After his NBA career, Garrity served as assistant general manager for the Detroit Pistons from 2016-20. His stint with Detroit primary personnel experience entering his job with Notre Dame.

According to Notre Dame’s press release, Garrity will “be tasked with developing long-term roster management strategies for both programs. He’ll work to establish a clear vision in recruiting and the transfer portal, while working hand-in-hand with the NIL office on a financial asset allocation strategy.”

The Irish added that in his role as men’s basketball sports administrator, “other key components of Garrity’s role include, but aren’t limited to, the development of annual strategic goals, team personnel management, budget analysis, revenue generation and fundraising, alumni relations and facility management.”

Garrity will take over two programs who operated without a general manager until his hiring. The practice of hiring a GM to manage personnel — particularly for NCAA Tournament teams whose head coaches have to handle March Madness and portal season at the same time — is becoming increasingly common in college basketball. Hiring one person to handle both basketball programs is rare.

Under head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Irish men’s basketball program employed a recruiting director in Brian Snow until Snow’s departure in March. Women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey opted to tab assistant coach Michaela Mabrey as recruiting coordinator.

“To President [Robert A.] Dowd, [athletics director] Pete [Bevacqua], Micah and Niele – thank you for your trust and for providing me with this amazing new opportunity,” Garrity said in the press release. “I can’t wait to begin serving our exceptional student-athletes in both programs and contributing to the broader mission of our athletic department and the University.”

With the Irish, Garrity won Big East Player of the Year as a junior in 1997, averaging 21.1 points per game. He led the Big East in scoring in 1998, averaging 23.2 points per game and earning second-team All-American honors.

A four-year starter for Notre Dame, the 6-foot-9 Garrity averaged 18.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists for his career.
