Newsstand: Notre Dame hockey opens 2025-26 season at IceBreaker Tournament in Arizona

The Brock Sheahan era of Notre Dame hockey gets a ceremonious start in one of the most eyes-on season-opening tournaments in college hockey. The Fighting Irish alum takes his team to Tempe, Ariz., for the annual IceBreaker Tournament at Mullett Arena this weekend.
The Irish will play host Arizona State on Friday. Then they take on Quinnipiac on Saturday.
It’s a late-night opening puck drop for the Irish with a 10 p.m. ET start time Friday. The Saturday game will get going at 6 p.m. ET. Both games can be heard on the radio via this link: click here. Notre Dame’s Tyler Reidy has the call. The games can be streamed via this link, per the university’s press release: click here.
Notre Dame is coming off a disappointing 12-25-1 season in the final year of the Jeff Jackson era, a tenure that spanned two decades from 2005-2025. The Irish won five conference tournament championships and three regular season conference championships under Jackson’s guidance.
Sheahan, who played and coached under Jackson in South Bend, is looking to restore the program to what it was during Jackson’s glory days. To do that, the team is taking things one step at a time. Micro, not macro.

“We want to win a championship, we think we’re capable of winning Big Ten Championships, but we’ve talked about that once, I think, I think one time, at the start of the year, and now they’re hearing it again,” Sheahan said. “But for us, it’s about getting better.”

Fighting Irish quote of the day
“When you treat people the right way, when you try and let them — or do the best to give them the best student-athlete experience that they can get, if they can see opportunity and hope for their games individually. But for our program and where we’re going as a team, I think that’s allowed or given them a good feeling about staying.”
