Newsstand: Notre Dame linebacker Jack Kiser named finalist for William V. Campbell Trophy

Notre Dame graduate student linebacker Jack Kiser is one of 16 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is awarded annually to college football’s most astute individual in regard to combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. JD Bertrand was a finalist last year.
And it was Bertrand who let Kiser know he’s a finalist this year.
The Fighting Irish media team told Kiser he had a virtual interview with a media outlet. When he got situated in front of a computer, it was actually Bertrand, now a member of the Atlanta Falcons, calling to share the news.
“I’m proud of you brother,” Bertrand said. “I couldn’t be more happy. And, honestly, there’s no one more deserving.”
Kiser is in his sixth season with the Irish program after growing up about an hour south of South Bend. He’s a team captain for the first time and is on pace to record the most defensive snaps he’s ever played in a single collegiate season. He has 34 total tackles this year, which ranks second on the team behind fellow linebacker Drayk Bowen‘s 38.

Sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love is a human highlight reel. How many tailbacks in the country could have gotten either of these plays to result in a first down, let alone both of them?
Mike Denbrock got tricky with it against the Yellow Jackets.
Fighting Irish quote of the day
“We’ve become younger, obviously, through injuries, but that’s okay. Navy doesn’t care about our age. No one on our schedule cares about age, and we don’t either. We just want to get them ready to go.”
