Newsstand: Notre Dame right tackle Aamil Wagner named semifinalist for prestigious award

Notre Dame has had a Campbell Trophy finalist in each of the last two seasons. The Fighting Irish’s redshirt junior right tackle, Aamil Wagner, took a step toward making it three in a row Wednesday when he was named a semifinalist.
The Campbell Trophy is known as college football’s “Academic Heisman;” it’s the premier scholar-athlete award in the sport.
Wagner is also a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, which goes to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. In addition, he’s one of 22 players across the country who’s a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. That is also a community-service-driven honor.
It should come as no surprise, considering all Wagner is up for, that he’s one of six Fighting Irish team captains this season. He was the only Irish offensive lineman who started all 16 games in the 2024 season. He’s started every game of the 2025 season thus far, too.

Fighting Irish quote of the day
“I think he’s proven by what he’s done the first three weeks that he’s a guy who likes responsibility. He likes to take it on himself a little bit. And I think you probably saw during the game, that’s him telling me, ‘Get off the buzzer, idiot. I’m good.’”
