According to Stats by STATS, the Notre Dame women’s basketball team is the first team in the sport — men’s and women’s — to defeat a better-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament by more than 40 points.

The No. 5 Fighting Irish crushed No. 4 Oklahoma 108-64 on Monday night, playing near-perfect basketball. Guard Dara Mabrey led the way for Notre Dame with 29 points, while fellow guard Sonia Citron posted 25 points. Notre Dame hit on 10 of 25 three-point attempts, good for 40.0 percent. Notre Dame has advanced to the Sweet 16 and will face a familiar foe.

Quote of the day

“I don’t have any words. This is something I prayed about. This is something I knew could come to life. I’m over the moon. I’m so proud of this team and our journey and to see how far we’ve come last season. We worked so hard to get to this point. We’ve had a lot of highs and a lot of lows, and it’s incredible to see them blossom in front of my eyes.”

— Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey after the win over Oklahoma
