Just hours after reports that Notre Dame would be hiring Miami’s Ronnie Regula as an analyst, the program appears to be adding another fresh face to the analyst group.

Former Northwestern running back Jeremy Larkin is set to join the staff, per John Brice of Football Scoop. He will work with the Notre Dame defensive backs.

Larkin played just over two years of football for the Wildcats before retiring in 2018 due to a cervical stenosis diagnosis — a condition in which the spinal canal is too narrow for the spinal cord and nerves. The diagnosis could have saved his life because the condition greatly increases one’s likelihood of spinal injuries.

He was a reserve back in 2017, but he started three games in 2018 before he retired. Larkin posted two 100-yard rushing performances and scored five touchdowns, the most scored in that time span by a Northwestern running back in 13 years.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound tailback finished his career (three starts, 16 games) with 156 carries for 849 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Wildcats. Since retiring, Larkin has been working as a defensive assistant at Northwestern. He received his undergraduate degree in 2020.

The Ohio native was a three-star recruit out of Cincinnati La Salle in 2016 and was recruited as a lineman. In addition to Northwestern, he held Power Five offers from Boston College, Illinois, Kentucky and Wake Forest. According to a 2014 article from Cincinnati.com, Notre Dame was interested in Larkin, although they never made an offer.

Joesph-Larkin reunion

Of note, since Larkin has been a defensive assistant with the Wildcats for the last two years, he is very familiar with Northwestern transfer safety Brandon Joseph. The 2020 All-American is set to be the most talented member of an Irish secondary in desperate need of a leader following the departure of safety Kyle Hamilton for the NFL.

Larkin will work alongside cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens and safeties coach Chris O’Leary in his new role. He is another example of a young, bright mind being added to the Irish staff, which is already one of the youngest staffs in the country.

Notre Dame kicks off spring camp on March 17 and the practice period will end with the Blue-Gold Game April 23.
