Head coaches: Navy — Brian Newberry (22-12, 3rd season); Notre Dame — Marcus Freeman (39-12, 4th season).

2025 team records: Notre Dame: 6-2 (L, 27-24 at Miami; L, 41-40 vs. Texas A&M; W, 56-30 vs. Purdue; W, 56-13 at Arkansas; W, 28-7 vs. Boise State; W, 36-7 vs. NC State; W, 34-24 vs. USC; W, 25-10 at Boston College); Navy: 7-1 (W, 52-7 vs. VMI; W, 38-24 vs. UAB; W, 42-23 at Tulsa; W, 21-13 vs. Rice; W, 34-31 vs. Air Force; W, 32-31 at Temple; W, 42-32 vs. Florida Atlantic; L, 31-17 at North Texas).

Noting Notre Dame: The Irish are winners of six straight, and the College Football Playoff Selection Committee likes what it sees. Committee chair and Baylor athletics director Mack Rhoades mentioned the defense’s improvement, the elite running back tandem of junior Jeremiyah Love and redshirt junior Jadarian Price, a 300-yard rushing game despite missing its starting center in a 34-24 win over USC and the performance of redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Carr. Notre Dame is will-versed in defending Navy’s option offense, although its defensive coordinator, Chris Ash, is not. Against standard run games, though, the Irish have allowed just 2.85 yards per carry, which ranks 12th in the country.

Noting Navy: Everything is about the option for the Midshipmen, who boast college football’s best rushing offense in total yards (317.25 per game) and efficiency (6.61 yards per carry). Senior quarterback Blake Horvath is the engine that makes Navy’s offense go, alongside senior fullback Alex Tecza and senior slot backs Eli Heidenreich and Brandon Chatman. The Midshipmen have played the eighth-easiest schedule in the country, though, and their defense is leaky.
