2025 team records: Notre Dame: 0-2 (L, 27-24 at Miami; L, 41-40 vs. Texas A&M); Purdue: 2-1 (W, 31-0 vs. Ball State; W, 34-17 vs. Southern Illinois; L 33-17 vs. USC)
Noting Notre Dame: It’s been a nightmarish start to the season for the Fighting Irish. There is no way of sugarcoating that. There was always a possibility of the Irish beginning the year 0-2 with games at Miami and at home against Texas A&M out of the chute, but allowing 41 points to the Aggies in South Bend wasn’t on the bingo card. Neither was botching an extra point and losing the game by a single point. Still, redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Carr is the real deal. He’ll keep the Irish in games against the better opponents on the schedule. Against team like Purdue? He could be good enough to lead Notre Dame to routs.
Noting Purdue: Purdue already has more wins in 2025 than the Boilermakers had in all of 2024. Hard to fathom, but true. And the underlying truth in that is this — Purdue is better set up to be competitive with Barry Odom at the helm than when Ryan Walters was the head coach. Through three games this season, everything feels a bit more structured from the Boilermakers despite a 33-17 loss to USC last week. If not for three interceptions thrown by quarterback Ryan Browne, including a pick-six, maybe that game goes differently. Bottom line is, he coaching is better and the players might be marginally better as well. That should result in a better outcome for Purdue vs. Notre Dame this year than last year, even if it’s not a win.
