COLUMBUS — Ohio State didn’t make its win over Ohio nearly as easy as it could have been.

The Buckeyes settled for field goals in the red zone and struggled to score at times. But the defense was dominant, while the offense found its footing and course-corrected on the way to a 37-9 win over the Ohio Bobcats.

The top-ranked Buckeyes stayed at the top of the latest Associated Press Poll following Week 3 action, ahead of the other top contenders in the sport.

Ohio State received 57 first-place votes. Other first-place votes went to Penn State, LSU and Oregon. The top five is rounded out by Penn State, LSU, Miami and Georgia. Oregon fell two spots to No. 6.

The Buckeyes had some issues pop up offensively, but now they have an idle week on Saturday to clean up some mistakes before opening Big Ten play on Sept. 27 at Washington.

“There will be some lessons learned tonight,” Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said. “But I was excited about the way that we didn’t panic. And I think that’s a sign of growth and maturity.Because it’s easy. And you can feel in the stadium when things aren’t going well. When, you know, we come out and we’re just kind of moving down the field, and it feels like, wow, this is going to be one of those games. And then you don’t score.

“And then before you know it, you come out in halftime, you see the score, they score a touchdown. It’s like, what is going on? And it’s easy to everyone for everyone to tense up in that moment. But everybody kept playing.”

Ohio State weathered some poor red-zone execution to beat the Bobcats and move to 3-0 and stay at the top of the latest AP Poll.
