Benji Gosnell decommits from Ohio State, Buckeyes lose tight end commitment

COLUMBUS — Ohio State is back to one tight end commitment in the Class of 2022 as Benji Gosnell has reopened his recruitment.
The 4-star tight end from Pilot Mountain, N.C. posted his decision on Twitter.
“This has been very hard,” Gosnell tweeted. “I’m thankful for the opportunity OSU has given me and the class they have shown throughout this tough decision. But after thorough discussion with my family, I have decommitted from Ohio State and opened up my recruitment.”
Gosnell has not yet been on campus in Columbus despite his commitment last November. He was scheduled to visit Ohio State in early June but was unable to do so as he wrapped up his baseball season at East Surrey High School. Multiple instances and opportunities to visit came and went, but other obligations seemed to keep him from getting into Columbus. Gosnell told Lettermen Row there are no hard feelings on either part.
“Ohio State is still a great place,” Gosnell said. “I wish nothing but the best for them and we parted on good terms. There are no hard feelings. They were very understanding. They’re a great staff and even better people.”
When he picked the Buckeyes, Gosnell knew it was a leap of faith but it was based on relationships he built during the early part of the pandemic.

“Coach Wilson and my head coach, Coach Lowman, they’re old buddies — they grew up in the same town — so they are aware of each other,†Gosnell said. “We did tons of phone calls, tons of Zooms … we had such a great relationship.”
Now, Gosnell is out of the Buckeyes top-ranked recruiting class. What happens next is anyone’s guess, but his brother Stephen, is a sophomore receiver at North Carolina and the Tar Heels will be one of the programs in the mix moving forward. There are also some who speculate that a move to linebacker could be the cards for Benji Gosnell, despite the Buckeyes recruiting him as a tight end. For his p
Ohio State still has one tight end committed in the Class of 2022. Georgia’s Bennett Christian was a key part of the decision from Gosnell to pick the Buckeyes. Now Christian will be put in a position to help try and find another.
