COLUMBUS — Eli Holstein didn’t know exactly what to expect from his Ohio State visit.

The Zachary (La.) 4-star quarterback left feeling impressed by the Buckeyes football legacy.

“It was the tradition,” Holstein told Lettermen Row. “How prestigious the school is in football and academics.

“Then there’s the stadium, just seeing how big it is and how many people it holds. It seems like a great atmosphere to play in.”

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound, soon-to-be junior was one of five players to earn a Buckeyes offer during the first Ohio State one-day recruiting camp of the year. The offer was No. 17 for him, but he’s now just one of three quarterbacks offered by Buckeyes quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis in the 2023 cycle. Holstein believes the Ohio State quarterback tradition is something to pay close attention to — and he worked alongside a pair of current passers there on Wednesday as C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord were helping the young prospects in attendance.

“They have had great quarterbacks in the past,” he said. “Giving me the opportunity and thinking I could possibly be like those quarterbacks means a lot to me. They are going to develop great quarterbacks. It was cool [working with Stroud and McCord]. They pointed some things out here and there to help.”

The people tasked with developing quarterbacks also impressed Eli Holstein. He worked with Corey Dennis the entire day. Their relationship has been growing over the last month or two leading up to camp.

“Coach Dennis emphasizes the little things,” he said. “And he focuses on those things because as a quarterback, the little things mean a lot. We talked about those throughout the camp, which helped.”

After the conclusion of camp, Holstein and his father took a tour of Ohio State and its facilities. But they stopped into Ryan Day’s office prior to that happening. That’s where the offer to join the Buckeyes was extended. Day impressed the young quarterback.

“His knowledge of the game and the quarterback position is amazing,” Holstein said. “He helped me with the little things during the camp which helped me. As the camp went on, I felt like I couldn’t miss.”

With an offer from Ohio State in hand, the next trips on the docket for Eli Holstein have already begun. He and his father left Columbus early on Thursday morning and will make stops at South Carolina and Clemson on Friday and Saturday. Like many 2023 prospects, recruiting is just heating up. There’s no hurry to do anything other than learn as much as possible about as many schools as possible.

He doesn’t have to make any other decisions anytime soon.

“We will just wait until camp season is over with,” he said. “We’ll look over all my opportunities and go from there.”

The chance to play at Ohio State is now one of the opportunities for Eli Holstein.
