COLUMBUS — The Ohio State athletic department has won the men’s sports 2024-25 Capital One Cup, which is given out to the top men’s athletics program for the past year.

It’s the first time the Buckeyes men or women have ever won the award.

Ohio State athletics will be awarded $250,000 from Capital One for student-athlete scholarships for finishing first in the standings.

Buckeyes athletic director Ross Bjork had this to say in a release about the Ohio State men winning the Capital One Cup:

“I want to thank Capital One for its stewardship of this important program that ultimately honors student-athletes, coaches and the support staffs who take great pride in what they do,” Bjork said in a release. “We had a highly successful and memorable year on the field in 2024-25, a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence that our student-athletes display.

“I continue to be inspired on a daily basis by the people who uphold and enhance Ohio State’s long-standing tradition of excellence in everything that we do.”

Of course, the Buckeyes football program led the way for the athletic department by winning the national title in emphatic fashion, barreling through Tennessee, Oregon, Texas and Notre Dame to win the first 12-team College Football Playoff national title and the program’s ninth overall title.

Here was the points breakdown that allowed Ohio State to win the Capital One Cup, according to the Ohio State athletic department:

The Ohio State men captured first place with 113.5 points that were compiled via a combination of national championships or Top 10 national poll rankings. Seven sports contributed to the points total: football (1st), soccer (3rd), wrestling (5th), fencing (6th), tennis (6th), gymnastics (7th) and lacrosse (9th).

This comes after Ohio State finished eighth in the final LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Standings for the same academic and athletic year.
