COLUMBUS — Ohio State playing in the Big Ten Championship was starting to seem like a bit of a pipe dream just a few days ago.

Now, Big Ten doomsday scenarios can be put on hold — at least momentarily. The Buckeyes held small-group workouts Monday, returned to the practice field Tuesday after football activities were paused last weekend due to rising COVID-19 cases within the program and remain on schedule to play Michigan State on Saturday.

There’s a lot of noise outside of Columbus right now. College Football Playoff rankings, minimum game requirements for the Big Ten title, COVID-19 issues at Michigan. But for Ohio State, right now all eyes have to be on East Lansing.

“We’ve tried to not keep them there as long for practice, but we’ve added a little bit more good-on-good,” Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said on his radio show on Thursday as workouts continued. “Cutting down on length of practice and increasing the number of quality reps. We’re hoping that allows us to play faster and get better as the season goes on.”

It resumes with the Buckeyes scheduled to head north to face the Mel Tucker-led Spartans, who have lost to Rutgers, defeated Michigan in Ann Arbor and upset a top-10 Northwestern all in the same season.

Ohio State’s offense nearly doubled-up Michigan State a year ago, out-gaining the Spartans 529-285 in a 34-10 win at Ohio Stadium. Justin Fields accounted for 267 total yards and three touchdowns, while Master Teague averaged 6.4 yards per carry on 14 attempts.

For anyone watching the game on TV or listening to the radio, Lettermen Row has all the viewing information that could possibly be needed to not miss a moment of the Buckeyes’ return to play.
