COLUMBUS — Ohio State has strengthened its grip on the top spot of the Associated Press Top 25. The Buckeyes remained No. 1 in the latest AP Poll.

After a shutout win over Wisconsin on the road, the Buckeyes are still at the top of the sport following Week 8 action. And it was in the middle of one of the craziest college football weekends of the year. Two top-five teams from last week, Miami and Ole Miss, lost. Miami was beaten at home by unranked Louisville in an upset, while Ole Miss lost on the road at Georgia. Last week’s seventh-ranked team, Texas Tech, lost to unranked Arizona State. And another former top-10 team, LSU, fell on the road at Vanderbilt.

And plenty of other upset served as a reminder of the ‘any given Saturday’ nature of the sport.

Ohio State received XX first-place votes, up from the XX it received last week as the grip on the top spot is strengthening again. Other first-place votes went to Indiana. The top five is rounded out by Indiana, Texas A&M and Alabama. Indiana beat Michigan State, while Texas A&M survived an upset bid from Arkansas and Alabama beat Tennessee in a ranked matchup.

The Buckeyes didn’t need any heroics or avoidance of an upset on Saturday. They beat Wisconsin soundly in a 34-0 shutout win over the Badgers. It was a clinical performance from Julian Sayin and the Ohio State passing attack — as well as the dominant defense from the Buckeyes. And now they have a week off before facing a Penn State team that has lost four straight games, all to Big Ten opponents.
