Is Ohio State still in position to land defensive lineman Tyler Baron?

Today’s question asks about the Buckeyes chances with 4-star defensive end Tyler Baron following a recent tweet that indicated he could be close to a decision.

There have not been many new revelations in the recruitment of Tyler Baron, even after his official visit to Ohio State in the early part of October.

The country’s fourth-ranked strongside defensive end has had a top-three school list of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio State for months. There’s always been the underlying feeling that the Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic product would stay home and suit up for the Volunteers barring some major program-wide changes.

That, of course, revolved around whether Jeremy Pruitt and his coaching staff would be dismissed from their duties. The prognosis for Pruitt and his staff — which includes Patrick Abernathy, Baron’s father — has changed a few times this season.  But ithas gone from downright dire to optimistic about a return next season and everywhere in between.

Right now, things do seem to be heading in a positive direction for the Volunteers after a rocky month of September. The program is on the cusp of bowl eligibility following a big SEC win over Kentucky on Saturday. It was the result of that game which seemed to spurn this tweet from Baron on Sunday afternoon.

When it came to the Buckeyes chances of landing the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Baron, the choppier the waters in Knoxville, the better the odds for Ohio State. And as the Volunteers have stabilized their program a bit, it seems more and more likely Tennessee will be the likely destination. Those odds seem even higher following Baron’s proclamation.

While the timing of that tweet appears ominous for Ohio State in the recruiting race, Baron did tell Lettermen Row that even though he “thinks” a decision is made, there’s no imminent announcement. A public declaration is still not likely to come before signing day in December.

That gives Larry Johnson and Ohio State a little time to try and sway Baron. If they’re still willing and wanting to try.
