Scarlet Sunrise: Urban Meyer returns to work at Ohio State on Monday

by: borrismart09/03/18

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Urban Meyer back at Ohio State

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will still miss two more games as a part of his suspension, but he can return to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Monday after his complete ban ended Sept. 2. Interestingly, it will still be assistants Ryan Day and Greg Schiano who address the media on Monday morning, and Day will also handle the Big Ten coaches teleconference and weekly radio show this week.

Birm breaks down visitors

Ohio State hosted a number of players on unofficial visits, and Lettermen Row recruiting czar Birm spoke with several of them about their impressions of the Buckeyes’ big win. Be sure to check out the Sunday night edition of Dotting The ‘Eyes.

Tracking true freshmen

Players who haven’t yet used a redshirt season will be able to play in up to four games without losing a year of eligibility. Lettermen Row will be keeping tabs on Ohio State’s Class of 2018 and who plays in which game. Check out the first redshirt tracker to see which true freshmen played and how they fared.

Nick Bosa, Heisman candidate?

Only quarterbacks and running backs win the Heisman Trophy these days, but don’t tell that to Chase Young. The sophomore defensive end had plenty of love to give to his fellow defensive end Nick Bosa after an incredible game against the Beavers.

“A defensive lineman has never won the Heisman before,” Young said following Saturday’s performance. “But, If anybody could win the Heisman, I think Nick Bosa could do it. Technique-wise, I mimic him in practice, his moves and things like that. Just me saying that, you know he’s the real deal.”

What we learned

There were plenty of takeaways from Saturday’s game against Oregon State, especially given the roster turnover at some positions and the improvement made by young players. But Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward started the list of what we learned against Oregon State with a big one: Dwayne Haskins’ impact.

Dwayne Haskins can change the game for Ohio State

There has never really been any doubt that the arm strength Haskins brings to the quarterback position could expand the passing attack for Ohio State. If there was any uncertainty, it centered around how much the redshirt sophomore might be asked to run as part of the power-spread attack — or if Tate Martell would be called on to supplement the attack. But Haskins used his feet just twice, once on an impressive scramble that was something of a callback to a critical rush last season at Michigan. And that has to go down as a positive sign for the Buckeyes, particularly since there were a couple of times when he could have taken open space on the ground but chose to throw instead for a bigger gain. Haskins looks more than capable of helping Ohio State evolve offensively and become even more dangerous.
