Ohio State wide receiver Kyion Grayes enters transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Ohio State wide receiver Kyion Grayes entered the transfer portal Tuesday night. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
After playing in two games and redshirting as a true freshman during the 2022 season, Grayes did not play for the Buckeyes in 2023.
He recorded one reception for two yards during his freshman season.
Buried on the depth chart and lacking the reps and production, Grayes is now set to enter the portal.
Grayes played high school football at Chandler (Ariz.) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 104 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according the the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also the No. 19 wide receiver and second-ranked player in the state of Arizona.
Ohio State still has plenty of top-level talent in the wide receiver room, even after Grayes’ departure.
The Buckeyes have their clear leaders at the top of the depth chart, but they still need others to step up and have a role. Grayes was among the crop that could have helped with depth in the crowded receiver room.
“When you have Emeka and Carnell, and then Jayden Ballard, Jeremiah, then you get into Bryson Rodgers, who has done some good things this spring — I know he had a couple of tough plays today — but we think he could really help us next year,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said after the spring game. “We’re missing Brandon Inniss. Brandon Inniss, same thing. He was having a lot of momentum but then there was a procedure. We just felt like out of caution, we had to get it done. We just didn’t want it to linger, but we’ll need him to step up in a big way.
“We’re going to need a couple more guys to step up, to build that depth there because we do have some really good players but we’re going to need them all. It’s important that some of those younger guys do step up.”
Grayes won’t be a part of that equation any longer, however. Because two years after he arrived at Ohio State, he’s now in the transfer portal looking to find a new home in college football.
