Buckeyes keeping Chip Trayanum in mind as emergency running back

Ohio State recruited transfer athlete Chip Trayanum back to the state he is from to be a linebacker.

The former running back at Arizona State, where he spent two seasons carrying the ball, still has those tailback skills in his arsenal, and the Buckeyes haven’t forgotten that. Trayanum spent time in practice last week at running back after sophomore back Evan Pryor went down with a season-ending injury.

Ohio State has just three scholarship backs on the roster, meaning Trayanum can be an emergency tailback if the Buckeyes were to need him to step in and play a role. The rise of freshman back Dallan Hayden has made Trayanum’s likelihood to be a running back quite slim. But Trayanum is there just in case.

Boy, he’s natural,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said of Trayanum. “And he’s doing a great job at linebacker as well. So he’ll be a guy that we could use as rain insurance if we needed him to, but you know, just seeing him live and in color, he’s a talented running back. So I’ve been very impressed by the way he’s playing linebacker, as well. But we can also use him in a dual role if needed. But right now, Dallan will be the third running back and we’re very impressed with his camp for a freshman to step in like this.”

Ohio State is beginning to buckle down inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and prepare for the regular season.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles met with the media for a press conference Monday morning after the latest training camp session.

And Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook and Tim May are back with a Practice Report to break down everything we learned from the leaders of the Buckeyes offensive and defensive units.

What did Day say about the preparations for the top-five season-opening showdown against Notre Dame? How is the new-look defense progressing this training camp? What is the offense doing to become the best unit in the country for the second-straight year? The Lettermen Row guys break it all down.

Don’t miss the Practice Report with Spencer and Tim as they try to squeeze in so many different topics to discuss after hearing from the Buckeyes head coach — and the head coach of the defense.

Five Buckeyes earn nod on Preseason AP All-American team

Ohio State is nearing the end of its preseason training camp and moving closer toward preparation for Week One against Notre Dame.

But the Buckeyes still have a few more preseason watch lists they’ve kept an eye out for. And Monday’s latest list showcased more familiar names for Ohio State.

The AP preseason All-American first- and second-teams were released Monday afternoon, and five Ohio State players were named.

Running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. were named First-Teamers. Quarterback C.J. Stroud and offensive tackle Dawand Jones were named on the Second Team.
