COLUMBUS — The spring game at Ohio State hasn’t seemed like real football for the last few years.

The Buckeyes have largely limited nearly all tackling from the spring game since Ryan Day took over for Urban Meyer. But don’t expect that to be the case Saturday. Ohio State needs to tackle and get comfortable with real, physical football.

Simply put: the Buckeyes aren’t taking the spring game lightly. They need to get work done in their final session before summer begins.

“For the spring game itself, we decided we’re going to go offense versus defense,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said on Thursday. “We’ll probably start off with a little bit of a thud, then quickly go into tackling. For the majority of the game, we will tackle in the spring game.

“I just think we need to play the game this year. We’ve got to go out there and tackle and play. I think it will be good for a lot of our guys to do that and get out there.”

The Buckeyes will play three quarters at varied lengths before a 10-minute fourth quarter. And while some of the starters and stars might not play much, Ohio State will have a real opportunity to see some of the young faces in the program out on the field inside the Horseshoe with live game reps.

For anyone watching the game on TV or listening to the radio, Lettermen Row has all the viewing information that could possibly be needed to not miss a moment of the spring game.

Ohio State spring game time, details

Ohio State will kick off the 100th season of the Horseshoe on Saturday with the spring game.

The first three quarters of the game will be 12-15 minutes long with play clock stoppage in effect. The fourth quarter will be a 10-minute victory lap with a running clock. Halftime will be 12 minutes. The Ohio State marching band will perform at halftime.

The Buckeyes will wear “DH” decals on their helmets to honor the memory of former Ohio State quartereback Dwayne Haskins. There will be a moment of silence prior to the national anthem and a video tribute to Haskins just before halftime. The memorial in front of the North Rotunda will remain through the spring game.
