Former Buckeyes star tailback waived, searching for new home

Trey Sermon had a tough time earning carries for the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie last season, despite being a third-round draft pick in the 2021 draft.

The former record-breaking Ohio State tailback will now try finding a role in a new backfield. Sermon was waived by the 49ers on Wednesday, becoming the odd man out in a loaded backfield that features plenty of talented options.

Sermon helped lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title, Sugar Bowl win over Clemson and a trip to the national title game. Ohio State lost in that game after Sermon was injured on the first series of the title game.

Since then, he hasn’t had the pro career he expected to have — yet. He can still find success in the league. But he’ll now need to do it with a new team. Sermon was cut by the 49ers on Wednesday.
