Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers will enter transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Quinn Ewers arrived at Ohio State as one of the highest-rated high school quarterbacks ever.
He leaves the Buckeyes program after just four months with the same potential. It’ll just have to be realized somewhere else.
Ewers informed the Buckeyes Friday night that he plans to enter the transfer portal. An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed the news to Lettermen Row.
One of the only players to ever be rated as a 1.000 according to the major recruiting networks, Ewers chose the Buckeyes after decommitting from Texas earlier this year. He reclassified from the class of 2022 into the class of 2021 to get a head start on college — and a massive name, image and likeness opportunity — and a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job for the Buckeyes this spring.
But he never truly gained comfort in the program after enrolling in August and immediately slotting into the fourth quarterback on the roster behind C.J. Stroud, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller.
“I think he would tell you that it’s been hard for him,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “Kind of jumping into this thing during the preseason, and then being out for a bit of a stretch. We’re trying to get him as much information as we can, but there’s a lot of catching up to be done there.
“He’s trying, he’s working at it but once we get to the season, it’s hard to catch guys up and get them reps because we need to get the guys reps who are going to be in the game.”
Ewers did enter one game, playing one series of snaps in the blowout win over Michigan State on Nov 20. But that’s the only game action he saw all season — and that he saw as a member of the Ohio State football program.
Ewers leaves the Buckeyes program after just four months in it — with the same untapped potential. It will have to be realized somewhere else.
