COLUMBUS — Less than a week removed from picking up his first technical foul of the season, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann was tossed late in the first half against Wisconsin while arguing an offensive foul call on sixth-year forward Justice Sueing.

Sueing was trying to back down Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl in the post. Wahl tumbled, and the whistle was blown, making Holtmann furious and The Schottenstein Center rain with boos.

An irate Holtmann pleaded his case with the officials, as center Zed Key went to the scorer’s table to try to hold back the sixth-year Buckeyes coach. But Holtmann didn’t let up, and he was ejected.

Ohio State was already trailing the Badgers, 37-27, at the time of Holtmann’s ejection. It was an all-around poor first half for the Buckeyes, who had as many turnovers (11) as field goals in the opening frame.

Associate head coach and offensive coordinator Jake Diebler took over as head coach, but Wisconsin closed the period with six straight points.

Wisconsin came into the night third-to-last in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (41.8%) but shot 51.6% from the field in the first half.

It’s the latest turn in a disappointing Buckeyes season. Ohio State went 2-7 in January and is at serious risk of missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Holtmann era.
