COLUMBUS — Ohio State (7-1) is hosting Miami (Ohio) (4-3) Wednesday night in the Schottenstein Center. The Buckeyes are riding a six-game win streak and have won all six of those games by 10-plus points. They’re searching for their best start since 2019-20 when they began the year 11-1.

This is the 10th all-time meeting between Ohio State and Miami, but the first since 2017. That year, the Buckeyes won, 72-59, at home. Ohio State leads the all-time series versus its in-state foe, 7-2.

Under head coach Chris Holtmann, the Buckeyes have the longest active win streak in the Big Ten against unranked non-conference opponents. They’ve won 30 straight games of that kind, stretching all the way back to November 2018.

Miami is led by head coach Travis Steele, who is in his second season with the RedHawks after coaching at Xavier from 2018-22.

What to know about Ohio State…

Via “Timely dunk, confident 3-pointers lift Buckeyes in B1G opener but work to do on defensive interior”

Bruce Thornton said after his 26-point night against Minnesota that every game in Big Ten competition is going to be a “dogfight.” It certainly was versus the Golden Gophers, even when it looked like it wasn’t going to be.

Ohio State was up by 22 late in the first half and ahead by 20 nearly five minutes into the second half.

Minnesota, however, never gave in.

“It’s Big Ten play,” Thornton said. “When you think you up, you’re really not up. So I’ve gotta keep that in the back of my mind and tell my team, ‘don’t get complacent and don’t get too comfortable.’”

The Buckeyes won’t be facing a conference opponent Wednesday night when Miami (Ohio) comes to town. Winners of six straight, Ohio State is knocking on the door of the AP Top 25. Holtmann’s team is currently 24th in the NET rankings.

A misstep against an in-state foe from the MAC would disrupt the very real growth the Buckeyes have displayed before another Big Ten game, this one on the road at Penn State, on Saturday.

“I think when you’re scheduling, you’re not exactly sure always when you’re going to be playing these two Big Ten games,” Holtmann said Tuesday. “There’s a window of time. So you’re trying to make sure you don’t have too long of time off here.”

At the same time, as Holtmann pointed out, facing a school like Miami (Ohio) can be concerning for a coach in a week like this. After all, the RedHawks have won four of their last five games, rank 58th nationally in effective field goal percentage (53.9%) and will likely come into the Schottenstein Center with all the motivation they will need against Ohio State.

“I think we need to have a readiness to play and great preparation,” Holtmann said Tuesday. “I think your antenna is up as a coach just because the reality of college basketball right now is real. Anybody who follows scores and watches scores knows that.”

And the reality is that anybody can beat anybody on any given night.
