COLUMBUS — Spring football has been confirmed for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes know when they’re going to start with practices slated to begin on March 19, the first of 15 workouts allowed by the NCAA during this offseason period on the calendar. But they haven’t yet nailed down how it will end despite setting a tentative date for the traditional closing scrimmage in Ohio Stadium on April 17.

Even with the state of Ohio loosening restrictions on fan attendance for sporting events, it remains unclear if the Big Ten or the Buckeyes will be able to welcome fans back to the Horseshoe next month. Ohio State also hasn’t committed to a format for the exhibition either, though third-year coach Ryan Day has made it clear he wants as many game-like scrimmages over the next two months as possible to make up for the developmental reps the program lost during the pandemic-shortened season last year.

“We’re definitely going to look at a different spring model on how we go about it,” Day said last month. “I’m going to try to do as many game-like situations as possible, for sure. Also the way that the season ended a little later here, we have no spring break, so it’s going to be a little bit different.

“What a great opportunity this spring to have these guys go compete. We’re going to try to do the best we can to simulate games this spring to get a feel for where these guys are at.”

The Buckeyes have been preparing for those opportunities for a little more than a month now during winter workouts, and there was always optimism that they would be able to have something resembling a normal spring with the full allotment of practices. But that was never guaranteed as Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten continued to deal with daily testing and precautions to continue to guard against the spread of COVID-19.

Now Ohio State knows for sure it can plan to get back to work this month.

All that’s left to figure out for the Buckeyes at this point is what it can do at the end of camp.
