Reid Carrico proud of Ohio State fight, thrives in big rivalry victory
Ohio State verbal commit Reid Carrico, the country’s No. 2-ranked inside linebacker prospect in the Class of 2021, is set to embark on his final year of high school football. Hailing from Ironton, Carrico committed to the Buckeyes early in his junior season, made no visits to other schools and has become a leader in the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class. A 6-foot-3, 225-pound, prototypical inside linebacker prospect, Carrico grew up dreaming of wearing the Scarlet and Gray. As he looks toward the future, Carrico is sharing his final high school season with Lettermen Row in a weekly journal that will focus on football, family and anything else on his mind as he prepares for Ohio State.
It certainly felt good to get back out there with my teammates and play some ball last Friday. I wasn’t sure we’d get a season, and to be able to start on time was a nice surprise.
I was happy to be back on the field. It made me feel like everything was almost back to normal, which is obviously huge in 2020 when normalcy seems to be impossible. Any little bit of normal is welcomed right now.
We beat our 100-year rival, Portsmouth, in our opener. We won 50-9 and I scored three times, but we still weren’t at all happy about how we played. Honestly, a lot of things happened that need to be cleaned up in order for us to make it back to the state title game. That’s what we’re here for and what we’re fighting for. The best thing that comes from a game like this last one is that is everybody gets twice as hungry and excited to make a better appearance the next week against Gallia Academy. It’s a big game and should be a good one.
It’s crazy that Ohio State still doesn’t have a schedule for when it can play. But I’m super proud to be a Buckeye right now as usual. Seeing all these players and parents on this year’s team fighting tooth and nail to be able to play is awesome to witness. As I’ve said before: It hurts the most for the seniors, and that’s why I’m so happy to witness the fight against the Big Ten because it reminds you of just how close the football team is.
Brotherhood is no cliche in Columbus, and this is another example of that. When the Ohio State football team says or uses that phrase, just know that they mean it. The evidence is everywhere around us right now.
