OU fans felt very confident they were getting one good piece of news Thursday evening. But Midwest City (Okla.) Carl Albert players had a surprise.

Not one, but two.

Just moments after 2025 linebacker Marcus James committed to Oklahoma, as many expected, there was a twist.

“And I’m bringing somebody with me,” James said.

2025 four-star athlete Trynae Washington joined James at the table and announced his commitment to the Sooners as well.

“It was a combined idea,” James said. “He said he wanted to commit with me. We did our best, tried to keep it a secret.”

James had been planting the seeds to his commitment for a while. Nobody was surprised at how his timeline transpired.

But Washington? The four-star had never even talked about a commitment timeline or top schools or anything like that.

“I told him I would commit with him,” Washington said. “I had never talked about committing. It was cool. I enjoyed it.”

Know who else enjoyed it? Head coach Brent Venables. Washington said Venables and the rest of the OU staff sent a celebratory video Thursday morning.

That’s now four Titans committed to the Sooners. 2024 running back Xavier Robinson picked OU in the summer. 2025 quarterback Kevin Sperry got it all started with his spring pledge.

Funny thing is, though, there could be more. But for now, it’s OK for OU fans to be pumped about the latest Carl Albert guys to enter the fold.

“I know we’re just going to build and build and keep building for years to come,” James said. “There’s no place better to be than OU.”

Washington said it was the family aspect that won him over. He said the staff and program has truly showed him signs they care.

James is pretty obvious – linebacker. But there are some questions about what Washington might play at the next level. Sounds like a split-out tight end or wide receiver. Washington mentioned his relationship with OU tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley.

James could be the next Cheetah for the Sooners. He said he has been talking to current Cheetah linebacker Dasan McCullough often.

Either way, it’s just about whatever is going to put them in the spot to do what they do best.

“They just want to put me in the best position to make plays,” James said.

OU now has five in-state commitments for the 2025 class and is trending to add even more in the weeks and months to come.

Carl Albert is 9-0 this season and ends the regular season Friday before the playoffs begin next weekend.
