Sooners Commits in Cali Set to Shine

After several weeks of coverage in Oklahoma and Texas SoonerScoop.com returns, again, to one of the Sooners long-time strongholds in recruiting – California. Oklahoma currently has a pair of commitments from the west coast and we’ll see both over the weekend. As such it’s time to take a look at who we’ll be seeing and what we’re going to get a look at.
Los Alamitos, Calif. @ Fountain Valley – Thursday
There’s no question that there are few players that Oklahoma fans are most ready to in Norman. Few would be higher on that list than tight end commitment Davon Mitchell. The talented pass catcher moved to Los Alamitos in the offseason after shining for Allen, Texas.
After seeing him last year against Denton Guyer’s duo of five-star Sooner signees, it’s Mitchell who is the focus of our Thursday night viewing. He’s one of the most naturally gifted tight ends in the country, there’s little doubt about that. But the chance to see him in person will be about getting to watch him work and seeing how his development has continued.
Also notable is seeing Mitchell’s physical development. With Mitchell planning to enroll in Norman this January – a full year and a half before his originally intended graduating class in may of 2025 – he’s a guy that will be asking a lot of himself to be ready so far in advance of a normal schedule.
Two other names to keep an eye on figure to be a pair of Los Al 2025 prospects. Those players are offensive lineman Maki Stewart and athlete Anthony League, though neither holds an Oklahoma offer at this point.

Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame @ Sierra Canyon – Friday
Sierra Canyon may be known to Oklahoma fans because of offensive line commitment Eugene ‘B.J.’ Brooks but they are one of the most talented rosters in the country. Names like Marquis Gallegos and Xavier Jordan are already committed to USC while Kwazi GIlmer is a UCLA pledge. All held Sooners offers but elected to stay closer to home.
That being said the chance to see Brooks was always going to be the focus of the trip. The big man shows some interesting things on tape but few positions are better served with an in-person evaluation. Brooks is a guy whose movement skills will be worth watching as well as his overall strength. His level of competition will be strong and we’ll get a real look at what he can accomplish for the Sooners.
In the younger classes both Notre Dame and Sierra Canyon are loaded with high-end talent that Oklahoma may identify down the road. Leading the charge are young standouts like Jaeon Young, Dane Dunn, and Ashdon Wnetzrak.
