The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2025 Oklahoma football season. Everybody wants to forget about 2024 and move forward.

Head coach Brent Venables and staff have attempted to do that. New face calling the offense (Ben Arbuckle). Venables calling the defense, it’s now or never for this regime at OU in the SEC. No beating around the bush.

Crimson Countdown: No. 15 Jett Niu 

2024 stats:  

Threw for 2,857 yards and 29 touchdowns to go along with 66 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as a senior leading Lehi High School to a 6A semifinal appearance in the Utah state playoffs.  

2025 outlook: 

Niu was a surprise final addition to the Sooners class of 2025, coming along with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle who flipped his commitment from Oklahoma State on national signing day.

While he participated in spring practice, Niu will likely redshirt this season, serving as something of an understudy to veteran Washington State transfer John Mateer and sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr.. 

It’d be hard to forecast a positive circumstance in which Niu is forced into a considerable amount of playing time in 2025. 

2025 quarterback outlook: 

It’s under center where many of Oklahoma’s hopes for an offensive turnaround begins. John Mateer along with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle arrive in Norman with a common goal in helping save Brent Venables’ job. And there’s plenty of hopium to go around. Mateer led the country in touchdowns a season ago and was thought to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Michael Hawkins’ development in just a short time under Arbuckle has turned heads as well. Mercer transfer Whitt Newbauer joins Jett Niu to round out the Sooners 2025 quarterback room.
