The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2025 Oklahoma football season. Everybody wants to forget about 2024 and move forward.

Head coach Brent Venables and staff have attempted to do that. New face calling the offense (Ben Arbuckle). Venables calling the defense, it’s now or never for this regime at OU in the SEC. No beating around the bush.

Crimson Countdown: No. 19 Jacobe Johnson 

2024 stats:

Played in all 13 games, making two starts, totaling 18 tackles (16 solo) with a career-high four tackles in Oklahoma’s Armed Forces Bowl vs. Navy. 

2025 outlook: 

Jacobe Johnson enters this third season in Norman in position to make his biggest contributions yet. After being forced into a tough situation as a sophomore in which he was forced to provide depth at wide receiver, the Mustang High School product is one of the many names vying for a starting spot in Jay Valai’s room. 

It’s been a quiet preseason for the Sooners defensive back but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 

Johnson has the measurables to play the position at a high level. It’s going to be all about taking that next step as a player this season if Johnson wants to reach his full potential. Certainly a name to know and a player to place high expectations on this season. 

2025 cornerback outlook: 

Stay healthy, period. OK, that’s simplifying things too much, but it has been an issue. Whether it’s something known like what has gone with Gentry Williams. Or just the lingering issue with Eli Bowen ever since spring. OU didn’t get aggressive in the transfer portal to land an experienced cornerback. So that puts a lot of pressure on some younger guys to grow up quickly. There are a lot of options for guys to come in and make their mark. A big season as well for cornerbacks coach Jay Valai to show he can get his guys playing at an elite level.
