Gage Mayfield officially signs with OU basketball

It is the first day of the basketball signing period, so no need to panic for OU fans. The Sooners have a one-man class at this point, but he is a good one.

And a last name that all OU fans love.

Forward Gage Mayfield made it official, signing with OU on Wednesday afternoon.

From Northport, Ala., Mayfield was a 2024-25 all-state selection and led Hale County High School to an area championship. He averaged 17.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game for the Wildcats.

Mayfield committed in September. He is No. 61 in the Industry Composite rankings.

Porter Moser says…

“The thing right away with Gage is his length and athleticism, and how those traits allow him to affect the game,” said Moser in a press release “For us, we’re trending toward those long wings, especially now that we’re in the SEC. He’s also got very good ball skills for a player his size. He’s able to bring it up in transition and his shot is improving daily.

“Defensively, he’s really solid with that incredible wingspan. And he fits us because of how we’re trying to create offense with our defense. He’s blessed with his anticipation and motor, two vital intangible attributes.

“Gage is such a great young man to be around. He’s got the kind of energy on the court and in the locker room that’s contagious, and our staff immediately connected with him. He’s going to be a great fit and we’re super excited he’s a Sooner.”

OU has been involved with a lot of elite recruits during this cycle, just been unable to lock it down when it’s all said and done. And Moser and crew are still involved with a number of top-ranked guys that haven’t signed.

The panic, obviously, is no longer there because of the transfer portal. However, you know they’re going to want more than a one-person class…  even though Mayfield feels like he will fit in just fine.
