It shouldn’t be surprising when you know OU softball has one elite class after another. But still, what freshman catcher Kendall Wells has been able to do during fall ball has been nothing short of remarkable.

OU continues its Battle Series event 6:30 p.m. Friday at Love’s Field. The final one will be next week to wrap up fall ball.

And what a fall ball it has been for Wells. The hype was up there for her upon Wells’ arrival, and she has lived up to it.

In a word right now? Easy. It’s not easy, but Wells can make it appear that way.

“Easy, just looks easy. She just has a presence at the plate, that if I was a pitcher, I would think I got to be very careful here,” head coach Patty Gasso said. “And if you’re making a pitcher think that just by the way you look at the plate, you’ve won. She always gets her swing off. So it’s been really impressive.”

Wells’ bat is already making noise. But it’s behind the plate where we’re going to see what kind of progress she can make.

Wells credits the mentorship of Isabela Emerling in helping Wells with all the little thing and intricacies of handling the staff.

That will continue to be a work in progress, long after fall ball is concluded. What is known, though, is Wells will be a factor in someway for 2026. Her future is now, and she’s soaking it all in.

“It’s definitely been a really cool experience,” Wells said. “I think it’s really helpful and cool to be in this environment so early in my career. To be playing in front of 2,800 fans in the fall is not something that all freshmen get to experience, so I think that’s really cool helping all of us freshmen out a lot being able to experience this early on. But we have great teammates by our side that are there and have been in this situation before and help us get through it.”
