There’s not much more OU baseball could have asked for from pitcher Kyson Witherspoon. He’s the ace, and the ace for a reason.

Witherspoon was dang-near unhittable. On a night where offense was at a premium, Witherspoon made sure it would only take one or two.

And the Sooners got that one or two, doing enough for a 2-0 victory against visiting Ole Miss on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark.

Witherspoon allowed just one hit in seven innings. He walked three and struck out eight, helping his ERA dip to 2.12 this season. The only negative was he needed 103 pitches to get through the seven frames.

He left with a 2-0 edge, as OU was able to get both runs in the bottom of the fifth. Skip Johnson’s club took advantage of back-to-back walks to begin the inning.

Dawson Willis drove in one run on a fielder’s choice, while Trey Gambill brought home the other on an RBI single.

That was more than enough for Witherspoon on this evening, righting the ship after OU had dropped its last two games at Georgia.

Jason Bodin came in for the eighth. After allowing a one-out single, Bodin induced a 5-4-3 double play to set the table for Dylan Crooks.

Crooks continues to be one of the best closers in college baseball. He pitched the ninth to earn his 11th save of the season. He allowed a two-out walk but finished the show in style with a strikeout. OU struck out Ole Miss 10 times Friday.

It is OU’s first win in Norman vs. Ole Miss since 1994. The Sooners only had three hits, but that’s just how good Witherspoon was.
