MMI: Sooners Defense Shines on Saturday

Oklahoma’s 28-11 win over SMU consisted of a lot of big-time performances. However, it also had a number of plays that show signs of real growth for the Sooners. From some young defensive stars to an offense that found it’s feet late in the game, there was plenty for the Monday Morning Idiot to break down.
One of the standouts of the week was undoubtedly emerging star Peyton Bowen who had a punt block as well as a huge pass break-up. During his weekly meeting with the media Sooners defensive coordinator Ted Roof discussed his young standout safety.
“We’ve learned that football really makes sense to him,” Roof said. “He’s very instinctive. He’s got a lot of pride in his performance. The moment’s not too big for him. Just put me in coach. Tell me what to do and I’ll do it. He’s that guy. He’s got a high ceiling and a really bright future.”

On the other side of the ball the Sooners struggled with a personnel package involving Jackson Arnold. Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby came away with positive reviews of his young star at the psoition.
“But I thought he did a really nice job of playing tough and playing physical,” Lebby said. “Obviously, we wanna convert on the fourth-and-one. That’s a situation where we had opportunities to get it on second and third down and didn’t. He gets put back in that situation. Mentioned this after the game, but that’s just invaluable experience for him. So just proud of his toughness and his mindset right now.”
