OKLAHOMA CITY – OU softball is one win away from advancing to the championship series of the Women’s College World Series.

With each victory, well, that all-time winning streak record grows. We’ve seen Nos. 49 and 50 in a row in Oklahoma’s return to Oklahoma City.

It’s an honor, for sure, but it remains something head coach Patty Gasso said is just not that big of a deal in this moment for this team.

“Because what we want to do is bring a national championship back to the University of Oklahoma and the state of Oklahoma because that will never be taken away from us,” Gasso said. “You can never take that away. It will live forever.

“But I do know, ’cause I’ve been in a lot of these races where there’s a lot of records that people are breaking. Will (Jocelyn) Alo’s home run record live forever? I doubt it, don’t think so. I thought no one would break Lauren’s (Chamberlain). No one thought Stacey Nuveman’s would break.

“Records are being broken all the time. It’s an honor. I had a conversation with Mike Candrea, which was really wonderful. We connected throughout the season. He’s just very congratulatory. That is great. But it’s just moving on. It’s taking things home that no one can take away. That’s what we’re about.”

The Sooners are 58-1 overall and on that 50-game streak.

Up next for OU

A rematch with Stanford. The Cardinal have eliminated Alabama and Washington in the WCWS and will look to send the Sooners packing Monday.

Freshman pitcher NiJaree Canady was sensational in a 1-0 win vs. Washington on Sunday afternoon. She gave up a leadoff hit and nothing after that.

The Sooners, behind the strength of pitcher Jordy Bahl, ousted the Cardinal 2-0 on the first day of the WCWS.

The semifinals begin 11 a.m. on ESPN. If OU wins, the Sooners advance to the championship series. If Stanford wins, the teams will immediately play one more time in a winner-take-all contest.
