There was confidence from the OU head coaches, but you simply were never going to know until it was over.

The confidence was justified. OU two-sport signee Alec Blair was not selected in the MLB Draft on Sunday and Monday.

Not because of ability, but because it’s obvious Blair made it known he did not intend to sign and wanted to come to Norman.

Blair is expected to play both baseball and basketball for the Sooners.

“He’s another long wing,” said head coach Porter Moser back in November. “Alec’s so unique because he also has really long arms. I love two-sport athletes. Think two-sport athletes, there’s a lot of characteristics I love about it.

“I know people will be doing the Ryan Minor comparison because he’s doing baseball and in that regional people talk about as much as, almost more so than his basketball. But man, he’s got tools in basketball to be — he’s high level but even beyond. He is an athletic, big wing that’s 6-6, 6-7.”

Blair was ranked No. 52 overall by MLB.com, so again, it had absolutely nothing to do with his ability.

But Moser and Skip Johnson worked hard throughout Blair’s recruitment. They laid out the plan, and sounds like we’re going to see if it will be fulfilled in Norman.

“Skip and his staff were phenomenal and it was fun pairing up with them,” Moser said. “Their program has a lot of energy, they recruit with a lot of energy, we did, and I think tag-teaming with Skip and his staff was great. And we are gonna work with them to make it happen. I think that’s part of it too, of talking to Skip, like, ‘Let’s make this work,’ you know?

“So he’s gonna have his time there — although he is on a basketball scholarship. But I would want… Like I said, I love two-sport athletes. I just think there’s a discipline about ’em, there’s a maturity about it and an understanding. I just think there’s a lot of great things and I think he’s gonna be really successful doing both. And it was, you know… Skip and his staff are first class and just high-energy, very hard-working, thorough, and we’re gonna make it work.”

Blair arrived at OU last month for basketball summer workouts.
