OU baseball falls from polls, men's golf regionals underway

Eddie On3by: Eddie Radosevich05/13/25

Well, that sort of uhhhhh … that wasn’t the kind of weekend that you envision when trying to make a case to host a regional for OU baseball. And that’s putting it mildly.

Swept for just the second time in conference play this season, Oklahoma’s performance in Lexington is a blow to already slim chances of playing host for the second consecutive season at L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark.

The Sooners pitching staff walked 12 (!) and hit seven batters over the weekend, if that gives you any idea how things went on the mound. Nineteen free base opportunities. Gross.

Kyson Witherspoon was roughed up, allowing four runs on six hits in the opener. Kentucky scored four runs in the third en route to a 4-3 series opening win. Cade Crossland walked four and hit three batters on Saturday, after inheriting a 2-0 lead before even toeing the mound. They trailed 4-2 after one.

Sunday was no better than the previous two days. After tying the game on Scott Mudler and Kyle Branch RBI singles, Kentucky answered right back in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back home runs.

On Monday, Oklahoma was – rightfully – punished for its sins. The Sooners fell from the D1Baseball.com Top 25 and Baseball America polls for the first time since the second week of the season, while they are No. 23 in Perfect Game’s Top 25. They head into this weekend’s regular season finale against Texas ranked No. 26 in RPI.

Oklahoma (32-17, 13-14) opens its final regular season series in Norman against Texas on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Horton makes debut in bigs

Nearly three years removed from a meteoric rise up the draft boards and into Oklahoma baseball lore, leading the Sooners to Omaha in 2022, Cade Horton made his Major League debut on Saturday for the Chicago Cubs.

Awesome for me, a Cubs fan. Even better for Horton, a Norman High School product, who is four years removed from missing his freshman season following Tommy John surgery.

Horton earned the victory in his debut, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five over four innings in a 6-5 win over the Mets at Citi Field.

A fantastic start for the 23-year old Oklahoma native, who was called up last week, making his big league debut in front of family and friends in the Big Apple.

Sooners golf in great position through 36 holes

Oklahoma has put itself into good position following the first 36 holes at the NCAA Amherst Regional.

Ryan Hybl’s squad sits in third place +1 behind Vanderbilt (-3) and Tennessee (-4). The Sooners led the field through 14 holes on Monday before struggling on Nos. 15 and 16 – the course’s toughest two holes – where they played 10-over par collectively.

True freshman Clark Van Gaalen (T8, -1) leads Oklahoma on the individual leaderboard, birdied six of his first 12 holes on Monday before stumbling on the way home with a trio of bogeys and a double. He got a shot back on the par-4 18th before signing his card for a two- under 68. His 10 birdies through 36 holes leads the field.

Ryder Cowan (T12, E) and Jase Summy (T20, +1) both sit inside the Top 20.

The Sooners are looking to extend their program record to 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships with a top-five finish. The NCAA Championships begin May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
