Oklahoma Sooners tight end Kaden Helms (18) is tackled by Texas Longhorns defensive back Jelani McDonald (4) in the first half of the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorn at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.

OU has dropped eight spots in the latest AP Poll, moving to No. 14 after its loss to Texas.

The Sooners dropped their first game of the season on Saturday, losing 23-6 to the Longhorns. It was a disappointing result for coach Brent Venables and his team. Oklahoma came into the game ranked No. 6, while Texas was unranked. The Longhorns are now back in the top 25 at No. 21.

“Just got done telling the team that today was a bad day and still have a really good football team,” Venables said after the game. “Start of the fourth quarter, it’s a one-score game. We hadn’t played great football. But we had our opportunities despite not playing well and doing the things that winning requires. Just the basic blocking and tackling, fitting gaps, making good decisions, catching the ball. Those types of things. Couldn’t get any rhythm in the second half.

“I think we were close to double the yards in the first half. Although it was still a close game, they were able to flip the script in the second half.”

The schedule isn’t getting any easier for OU. It’s set to face five ranked opponents in their final five games. The only unranked opponent remaining is South Carolina, which the Sooners will face this coming Saturday.

“Remind them we still have a heck of a team. Going in, we had a heck of a team,” Venables said. “That had done a good job of improving as the season has gone on. Through all the different challenges of a season. Through defeat, you learn a lot about yourself. Get better from it. I believe in these guys. I hurt for them. Know how much they hurt and how much they invested into this moment. You have to be able to carry that weight, the weight that goes with it. When you go into the locker room that comes with it, take some of the bad with the good.

“Some of these toughest moments and challenges, if we are who I know and believe we are, will respond the right way. Learn from some of the mistakes that we made today. Have to learn it through a loss, which is tough. These guys are very invested. I know how we’ll respond. We have incredible, strong leadership in the locker room. Got a good group of leaders, coaches. This is a team that still believes, team that is still together. Without question, guys that are ready to respond.”
