OU football bowl projections after Alabama win

OU is going bowling for the 26th consecutive season.
The Sooners upset No. 7 Alabama on Saturday 24-3, earning their sixth win of the season. That means they’re officially bowl-eligible. And while making a bowl was not the ultimate goal this season, it is a nice consolation for what’s been a tough year.
“What I’m most proud of, is the guys continued to believe that,” coach Brent Venables said. “You know? In the face of criticism — and all of it justifiable. I mean, we’re 5-5 at Oklahoma. And we’ve got to be better. But the players, and I just love their resolve. It’s really cool to see them — I told y’all I hurt in the past because they deserved an opportunity to celebrate all their hard work.”

Which bowl game OU plays is very much up for debate. There are several new bowl games the Sooners could play in due to the SEC tie-ins. It will also largely depend on how many SEC teams get into the 12-team playoff. Next week’s game against LSU will also play a major role, as a win would likely put the Sooners in a better game.
With one week remaining in the regular season, here’s where OU is projected to play in its bowl game:
- ESPN (Bonagura): Gasparilla Bowl vs Virginia Tech (Dec. 20)
- ESPN (Schlabach): Independence Bowl vs West Virginia (Dec. 28)
- CBS: Frisco Bowl vs Kansas (Dec. 17)
- Sporting News: Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs Virginia Tech (Dec. 26)
- CFB Network: Cure Bowl vs Louisiana (Dec. 20)
- Athlon Sports: Gasparilla Bowl vs North Carolina (Dec. 20)
