OU freshmen Tory Blaylock, Courtland Guillory earn SEC postseason honors
OU freshman running back Tory Blaylock and cornerback Courtland Guillory were turning heads all season.
On Thursday, they officially got recognized.
Blaylock and Guillory were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, the conference office announced Thursday.
Blaylock has started in five of the 12 games and leads the team with 444 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries. He has also made eight receptions for 41 yards. The true freshman from Humble, Texas, has rushed for at least 100 yards twice, registering 100 yards and two touchdowns at Temple and 101 yards and a TD at South Carolina.
“In spring ball I think we ran outside zone and he circled the edge and went down the sideline and I was like, ‘Alright. Kid can roll.’ And then later on in that same spring ball, I think it was Kip Lewis blitzed in the A-gap and Tory stepped up and picked it up,” OU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle told SoonerScoop earlier this season. “Like didn’t flinch at all. Did a great job picking it up, we were able to get the throw off. And those are just like two examples of stuff where I was like this kid’s ready to play ball.
“Constantly doing the right thing and when he does mess up, okay, he doesn’t usually make the same mistake twice. And so I think that speaks to a level of maturity for a kid so young to be able to take coaching, understand a mistake and then fix it. He does that at a high level. But he just has a great, I don’t know what the word I’m trying to say here is… He’s got a great, I want to say mindset but there’s another word. He’s just has a great way that he carries himself in his process, his preparation and his game play.”

Guillory, a true freshman from Houston, has been a steady presence at cornerback for the Sooners. He has played in all 12 games and made 10 starts, totaling 39 tackles (1.0 for loss), six pass breakups (second most on the team) and a QB hurry. Guillory registered at least four tackles in each of the last five games and in six contests this season, all in SEC play. He has logged 33 of his 39 tackles, five of his six pass breakups and both of his tackles for lost yardage against SEC competition.
“I mean, he’s a dog,” OU cornerback Gentry Williams said. “They don’t make a lot of Courtland out there, if any. He’s one of one, rare. He’s talented, but he wants to get better. You don’t see that in a lot of young guys. He wants to get better and he’s gonna be really good.
“Attitude. Attitude. When you got attitude like that, the way he plays? A lot of people can’t play like that, and I love his aggression, attitude. Dude a baller.”
Selections were made by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
