OU moves up to No. 5 in latest AP Poll

OU continues to move up in the polls.
The Sooners rank No. 5 in the latest AP Poll, after not playing this weekend. They are the second-highest-ranked SEC team behind only Ole Miss, which is No. 4 after beating LSU on Saturday. This is the highest OU has been ranked in the Brent Venables era. The Sooners haven’t been in the top five since Oct. 8, 2023, when they beat Texas and moved up to No. 5 for one week. Before that, it was Nov. 13, 2021, when they were No. 4 and lost to Baylor in Waco with Caleb Williams as the quarterback.
“I’ve been confident in the team,” Venables said on Thursday. “The guys have put a lot of work in. We’ve developed the team in all three phases. There’s 16 players that this is year four. They’re the foundation of our team. We’ve got great leadership. These guys like to work. They’re talented. We’ve got competitive depth. We’ve done a good job with the few transfer portal players that we’ve brought in. A lot of them, most of them are contributing at a high level. They’re in our systems now. I like the chemistry of this football team. I like the cohesion of this football team.”
OU is set to face six top 25 teams the rest of the season, including three top 10 teams. It will be a difficult challenge forthe Sooners. But so far, with wins over Michigan and Auburn, they have proven they are worthy of the top five ranking.

“There isn’t a team and a game on our schedule that we can’t win,” Venables said. “The flip side of that is true, as well. It doesn’t take much to be on the right side of it and it doesn’t take much to be on the wrong side. But these guys have a willingness to put the work in, to invest in the process and how you show up every single weekend and have a chance to win. Those are all the reasons and I have great confidence in our staff, as well. There’s not any one position that if they’re gonna be successful at their position, they can’t do it alone. It takes a lot of people and their teammates as well.”
OU will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Norman when it faces Kent State at 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
