There was a special visitor in town for OU as the Sooners got ready to take on Missouri. One Dr. Steven Shin was indeed at Owen Field.

Shin has become dang-near a cult legend in Norman after helping quarterback John Mateer recover from thumb surgery.

And he watched Mateer play a clean game in the 17-6 victory for No. 8 OU against the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

“Yea, I knew he was coming,” Mateer said. “I had to keep it low key. I didn’t want him to get bombarded. But I saw him in the S.O.U.L. Mission office and in the training room after. And he’s a great human and I’m glad he could come. He was really excited to get out here and his friends pressured him to come, and so they made it happen.”

Mateer broke his right thumb back in September in a win against Auburn. A few days later, he flew to Los Angeles, and Shin, a world-renowned surgeon, performed the surgery.

The goal was to attempt to have Mateer back for OU in time for the Texas game. Somehow, it actually worked.

It wasn’t Mateer’s finest hour, but it got him back into a rhythm and figuring things out once again.

Mateer hasn’t set the world on fire offensively down the stretch, but what he has done? Taken care of the ball.

This is now back-to-back games without a turnover from Mateer and the OU offense.

Mateer completed 14 of 30 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns (Isaiah Sategna, Javonnie Gibson).

His toughness was on full display in the fourth quarter. Time and time again his number was called not for his arm, but his legs. Mateer was the game’s leading rusher with 60 yards on 18 attempts.

OU (9-2) hosts LSU next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. A win? And the Sooners should most likely clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff.

And that’s why Shin is always going to be a legend.
