OU quarterback John Mateer says surgery a success

OU quarterback John Mateer took to social media Thursday afternoon to give everybody an update on how things are going, following his surger.
“Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!” Mateer tweeted out a day post-op on Thursday.
Mateer underwent surgery on his right thumb Wednesday. No timetable has been given about how long he will be out.
We do know Mateer won’t play in the next OU game, home against Kent State next Saturday. Head coach Brent Venables has already named Michael Hawkins Jr. the starting quarterback for that contest.
Mateer injured his right thumb in the first quarter of the OU victory against Auburn last weekend. Despite the injury, Mateer still completed 16 of his final 17 passes for 167 yards and the game-winning rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

OU is 4-0 overall this season and 1-0 in the SEC. Ranked No. 7 overall, it’s OU’s best poll position since beating Texas in October 2023.
The Sooners have a bye this weekend before Kent State comes to Norman to begin October. It is unknown whether Mateer will be available for the Red River Rivalry against Texas the following weekend.
Hawkins Jr., for what it’s worth, started against Texas last season as well. As a true freshman, Hawkins was thrust into the limelight after Jackson Arnold was benched.
Although OU fans would love to have Mateer back, clearly, this is also a different Hawkins in 2025. A lot of that can be attributed to his work ethic and dedication. Also, the OU offense is in a much different place under first-year offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.
It is now officially a waiting game for OU fans to know when Mateer will return to action.
Editor’s note: Venables and select players are expected to address the media Thursday afternoon. SoonerScoop will have you covered for everything that happens in Norman.
