The story of the week going into OU and Temple was about the Sooners trying to handle success. That story ended just a few minutes into the game.

Anybody worried about an emotional letdown had nothing to be concerned about. OU was dominant early, often and cruised in its initial road game of 2025.

The Sooners continue to show why this season is different in a 42-3 victory against Temple at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here are your quick-hit takeaways

Efficient Mateer got things rolling

There was a bit of a lull for OU quarterback John Mateer toward the end of the second quarter. But he came out so fast, so efficient early that it took whatever Temple crowd there might have been right out of the game.

It started with a ridiculous third-and-19 conversion that led to the game’s first touchdown. Nothing ever slowed down.

Mateer finally got to rest in the fourth quarter. Job well done, let Michael Hawkins Jr. get one of those four games.

He completed 20 of 34 passes for 282 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 63 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown. That is nine straight games of having at least one rushing touchdown and one passing score.

Blaylock continues to shine

True freshman, so what? Running back Tory Blaylock continues to be the most consistent back for the Sooners right now.

He had his first 100-yard game, his first multi-touchdown game. Again, it just looks different when he is running the ball.

Blaylock went for 100 yards with two touchdowns.

Dominant defense

The OU defense, amazingly, is still searching for its initial turnover. Everything else? It has been ridiculously solid.

It was again vs. the Owls. Temple finally got over 100 yards in the fourth quarter. The three-and-outs, tackles for loss. Pure dominance on display.

Not just one player, not just one unit. A thing of beauty for OU fans to watch in Philadelphia.

Note: Defensive end R Mason Thomas was ejected for targeting in the second half. He will have to miss the first half next weekend against Auburn.

Up next

Let’s get SEC play going in Norman. It’s going to be a couple of ranked 3-0 teams going at it next weekend at OU. Auburn (3-0) against the Sooners at 2:30. It is time for Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold to return to The Palace.
