OU, Texas A&M named SEC Tournament co-champions, title game canceled

If you believed the battle between OU and Texas A&M softball could help determine the No. 1 overall seed, well, sorry.
Athens, Ga., had been a tremendous host for the SEC Tournament until the championship. The storms came early, came often and never let up.
About two hours after first pitch was scheduled, the SEC announced there would be no championship game between the Sooners and the Aggies. Instead, both squads would be named co-champions of the SEC Tournament.
Now? OU and A&M and everybody else will await their fate. Selection Sunday is set for 6 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2.
Texas A&M entered the week as the No. 1 team in the RPI, and the Aggies did nothing this week to lose that honor. Run-rule victories against South Carolina and No. 3 Texas definitely put the Aggies in a strong position.
OU, meanwhile, did check off one box in beating LSU. The Sooners had not played the Tigers before during the season.
Then, of course, the epic semifinal against No. 5-seeded Arkansas. OU trailed 6-1 in the third inning before rallying for the 8-6 victory. Freshman Gabbie Garcia crushed a three-run walk-off home run to complete the comeback.

Head coach Patty Gasso sounded pretty confident coming into the week about OU being a solid top eight seed. And again, nothing OU did this week should change that as well.
“And whatever we do, I mean, we’re going to be in the top eight,” said Gasso earlier in the week. “I feel very confident of that. I trust that we’re going to be in the top five. We can’t win the SEC and not be, in my opinion.
“So we’re going to go in and work our hardest to be our best to lend us into hosting at home. So I do feel if we have a good SEC tournament, that might secure us to move up just one spot or so, which would make a difference.”
OU is 45-7 this season and earned the outright SEC regular season championship. The Sooners and Aggies still have not played each other.
