OU tight end Davon Mitchell no longer with team, will enter transfer portal

Redshirt freshman tight end Davon Mitchell is no longer with the OU football program, according to SoonerScoop sources. Mitchell is now expected to enter the transfer portal.
Mitchell arrived in Norman has one of the highest-rated tight ends in the country. Originally a five-star and No. 1 tight end in the 2025 class, Mitchell was reclassified to the 2024 class. He did not play a snap last season for the Sooners, despite there being such high expectations.
The reason for Mitchell’s departure from the program is unclear at this point. But it is known that the 275-pound tight end has struggled to see much playing time even this spring, despite plenty of opportunities. SoonerScoop can report that Mitchell did practice on Thursday, but his locker was cleaned out Friday morning.

There has been a lot made about the tight end room. Mitchell was expected to be the prize possession of the group. The Sooners brought in three tight ends from the transfer portal in the winter: Kennesaw State’s Carson Kent, Louisiana Tech’s John Locke and Pitt State’s Will Huggins. Senior Jaren Kanak moved from linebacker to tight end this spring, too. Still, many inside the program hoped Mitchell would emerge as the top tight end.
Now, Oklahoma’s focus at tight end will shift to the spring portal, where the Sooners are expected to be in the market for a playmaker at the position.
