OU vs. Auburn recap: Mateer leads game-winning drive to beat Tigers

No. 11 OU (4-0, 1-0) escaped with a 24-17 win over No. 22 Auburn (3-1, 0-1) on Saturday in Norman.

The Sooners and Tigers had a defensive battle. Oklahoma totaled only 303 yards, including only 32 on the ground. Auburn wasn’t any better, totaling only 287 yards and 67 yards on the ground.

Here is how it all went down on Saturday for Oklahoma. 

OU vs Temple game recap

  • Defining moment: The final offensive drive. Down 17-16 with 7:08 remaining, quarterback John Mateer led the Sooners on a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. It was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by Mateer.
  • MVP: The defensive line. OU totaled a school record 10 sacks and 14 tackles for loss in the game. R Mason Thomas had the game-sealing sack, taking down Arnold in the end zone for a safety with one minute remaining. Jayden Jackson had a monster game as well, totaling 2.5 sacks.
  • Stat to know: Mateer finished the day 24-of-36 for 271 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for a team-high 29 yards and one touchdown. But the stat for Mateer is that he completed 16 of his final 17 passes, including a stretch of 11 in a row.
  • Injuries: OU did not suffer any notable injuries in the game other than linebacker Owen Heinecke leaving the game in the second quarter with a hand injury. Heinecke returned to the game in the second half.
  • Up Next: The Sooners will have its first bye week of the season next week. They will return to Norman on Oct. 4 to face Kent State at 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
