OU women's basketball: Sooners fall to No. 3 UCLA

No. 6 OU women’s basketball lost its first game of the season on Monday.

The Sooners fell to No. 3 UCLA 73-59 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, after a game that was back and forth most of the night. Oklahoma fell behind early, trailing 41-26 at the half. It cut the deficit to just one in the third quarter, but the Lady Bruins were too much down the stretch, outscoring OU 32-23 in the second half.

Leading the way for the Sooners was senior guard Payton Verhulst, who scored 16 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Zya Vann added 13 points, while Sahara Williams added eight and Raegan Beers had seven. True freshman point guard Aaliyah Chavez struggled from the field, going 4 of 16 shooting and scoring on seven points. Chavez did have three assists and no turnovers.

For UCLA, it was led by Utah transfer guard Gianna Kneepkens, who scored 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Kneepkens was one of the few targets OU had in the transfer portal. The Sooners just missed out on Kneepkens and certainly could have used her Monday night.

As a team, the Sooners shot just 25% from the 3-point line, while the Bruins shot 36%. UCLA really showed its strength off the bench, outscoring Oklahoma’s bench 18-4.

OU will be back in action Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center against Kansas City.
