SoonerScoop Sights & Sounds: OU 50, Iowa State 20

OU embraced expectations. And after some early struggles, put together a complete effort in the 50-20 victory against visiting Iowa State.
The Sooners are 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the Big 12. And you might have heard it’s Red River Rivalry week time with No. 3 Texas. Both teams are undefeated for the first time since 2011. Both teams are 5-0 for the first time since 2008.
“Guys took accountability,” head coach Brent Venables said. “They own their work and some of the things they needed to do. We try to do some things that may help us a little bit from a scheme standpoint, small things situationally; I thought we were a little better. Like I said, we have so far to go. If we want to have the kind of season that we want, we have to get to 5-0. This is about improving and needing to be relentless to improve. We have to get better.
“We’re not a championship team right now but this is another step to try to get there. I love the will and the fight and the toughness and the leadership. I told the guys that I love the leadership. Leadership is not a position, it’s an act. It’s being a doer. You can’t just be a Danny Stutsman and a Dillon Gabriel.

“If we’re trying to do culturally and the locker room and something that has longevity and real roots, this has to be a player-led football team. I want players that lead and coaches get out of the way. We develop that. Some guys are naturally there. We have to promote that and nurture that. We have to be a critical part and improve and develop that.”
