That’s the type of commitment Sooners football fans have been waiting for. Elite recruit, big-time battle and a win.

That’s exactly what OU earned with Los Alamitos (Calif.) High tight end Davon Mitchell announcing his pledge to Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell had offers from all over, but the biggest competitors felt like Miami and Alabama. And down the stretch, the Hurricanes certainly made it interesting.

Interesting, but certainly not enough. Give credit to head coach Brent Venables and tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley for being able to take the lead in this race early and never give it up.

Mitchell became a high priority for OU after being offered last June during his on-campus camp performance. The general consensus there was that as long as Mitchell showed up, he would be offered because he’s just that good. And he was that good.

Ever since, OU has been as all-in with Mitchell as it can possibly get. It was crucial for OU to win this recruitment because the Sooners made some strategic choices to bypass some familiar in-state names to concentrate on Mitchell.

Mitchell will be at Los Alamitos, but he’s originally from Allen (Texas) High. There has been that natural connection with 2024 quarterback commit Michael Hawkins, who was also at Allen the same time as Mitchell. Neither will suit up for the Eagles in 2024.

There has been a lot of speculation about Mitchell reclassifying from the 2025 class to the 2024, and Mitchell said he will be 2024 during his announcement.

Mitchell is No. 29 overall in the industry composite rankings for 2025. He is also a top-50-ranked prospect for every single recruiting service. His 2024 ranking is TBD.

That’s where Mitchell resonates right now. OU has added five commitments for the 2024 class in recent weeks. However, Mitchell’s elite ranking is something OU fans have been waiting for from the recent solid commitments.

It was a gamble by OU to focus so much on Mitchell. But it’s a gamble that has paid off and gives OU one dynamic of a playmaker at the tight end spot.
