Where OU ranks in the latest College Football Playoff rankings

OU is on the cusp of making the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.

The Sooners ranked 8th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, which were released on Tuesday night. That means Oklahoma would host a first-round playoff game if the season were to end this week. But OU still has work to do, with one final regular-season game against LSU on Saturday.

It does appear, though, that if the Sooners can beat the Tigers, they will get into the 12-team bracket.

“It’s a blessing to have an opportunity to do something like this,” quarterback John Mateer said on Monday. “This is something you’ve dreamed of, or something I’ve dreamed of my whole life. Having the perspective to see the opportunity is great. But also understanding it’s another game. I don’t mean that, it’s the most important game because it’s the game we have.”

OU has one of the most impressive resumes in the country this season. It’s beaten five AP-ranked teams, which is more than any other school. It also has three wins over current CFP-ranked teams — Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan. And its only losses are also to ranked teams in Ole Miss and Texas.

That’s why the Sooners appear to control their own destiny. All they need is one more win at home.

“Going into our last regular-season game here at home, we all know what’s on the line this weekend,” OU coach Brent Venables said. “I just want to give a shoutout to our fans, to make it an amazing day—from the Walk of Champions all the way to the warmups to the first third down in-game—they can really have a great, great impact, and I expect them to be at their best like I expect our team to be at our best as well. It’s been a really, good, strong homefield advantage for us and can make things really difficult for them offensively, in particular.”
